Brainstorm: Writing About Neurodiversity

EVENT INFORMATION

This creative nonfiction writing workshop will expand the artistic talents and knowledge of Maricopa’s students, faculty and staff by providing them with an opportunity to learn about, talk about, and write about neurodiversity (the variations found between individuals’ thinking patterns and behavior). Mental disorders are not readily discussed or written about at school or in the workplace; mental illness is often a taboo topic, which has led to stigma and stereotypes. Stories about our own or our loved ones’ struggles with mental disorders often go untold, but this workshop will help bring those stories to the forefront. Participants will be encouraged to write and share about their own experiences with neurodiversity so that they can develop a sense of community and belonging. A common directive in the world of creative writing is “Write what you know”, which many beginning writers—and seasoned writers—struggle with when it comes to revealing what they know about mental diversity and its manifestation in everyday lives. This workshop is meant to be a starting point for writers to articulate what they know about experiencing mental diversity individually, within their family, among friends, and in their work lives. Attendees will be provided with writing prompts to help their stories emerge, and publishing opportunities will be discussed.
